Louis van Gaal has insisted that Manchester United don’t need defensive reinforcements in January, and claimed there may be no new faces at Old Trafford.
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal claims he won’t be forced into the transfer window no matter how bad the defensive injuries get.
Despite Chris Smalling adding to a lengthy defensive injury list, van Gaal has insisted that he doesn’t need to bring any more defenders to Old Trafford in January.
Robin van Persie bailed them out against Southampton last weekend, with the former Arsenal striker scoring a brace to seal a 2-1 win; the Dutch international’s goals and the Saints lack of clinical finishing enough to gloss over what was a poor defensive display from United.
“When you have injuries you cannot solve the problem otherwise,” said van Gaal.
“Do we have to buy (defensive) players? No. We have more than enough.”
Although van Gaal has been forced into using inexperienced youngsters such as Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair this season, he still sees no reason to make any defensive additions to the squad in January.
