Sir Alex Ferguson has lifted the lid on why ‘Fergie Time’ really worked as a ploy during his managerial success at Manchester United.
Ferguson was speaking as part of the BT Sport show ‘Clare Balding meets’ and described what made the strategy work against key rivals in the Premier League.
Sir Alex was famous for employing the tactic from the sidelines, often gesticulating by pointing at his watch to supposedly influence the referees.
He said: “Absolutely [other teams were frightened of it].
“That’s why I used to go with my watch. But I never looked at my watch. Honestly.
“I didn’t know how many minutes but it gets across to the opponents and the referee.”
He added: “It was just a little trick.”
