Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas was hauled off at half-time after missing a penalty he should never have been allowed to take.
He incurred the wrath of his manager after ignoring set-piece instructions to take a penalty against West Brom… and blasting it wide.
The Toffees were awarded a first-half spotkick after Joleon Lescott handled inside the box. But instead of regular penalty taker Leighton Baines doing the honours from 12 yards, Mirallas seized hold of the ball and refused to let it leave his grasp.
Perhaps inevitably, the Belgian smashed it wide and did not reappear for the second half.
It was widely reported earlier on Monday that Tottenham saw an inquiry for Mirallas rebuffed. After this misdemeanour, it might be worth a second attempt in the morning
