Lobi Stars lose to Rivers Utd as Heartland shock Enyimba



Lobi Stars have remained top of the Nigeria Professional Football League despite a 2-1 loss to title chasing Rivers United during the Match Day 15 action at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.

The Benue-side who have now suffered their third league defeat began the game on the back foot as they fell to a second minute goal scored by Nelson Esor from the first corner kick of the game taken by Konan N’Gouan.

In the 11th minute, Lobi’s John Lazarus from the right wing caught the defenders napping to restore parity with the first half ending 1-1.

At the restart of the second half, Lobi who had prior to this game were unbeaten against Rivers United in their last 6 meetings took control of the early minutes of the second half.

As the game wore on, Rivers turned up the heat on their guest who were defending stoutly till Malachi Ohawume in the 75th minute scored the winning goal to end the game 2-1.

At the Aba Stadium, Enyimba, who were still basking in a 4-1 demolition of Algeria’s AC Paradou in the CAF Confederation Cup, were upset by regional rivals Heartland 2-0.

Enyimba FC who have won just one of their last six matches in all competitions and experiencing their worst start since 2016 when Heartland’s Abubakar Sadiq scored in the 30th minute to open the scoring.

With another defeat staring at their faces, the People’s Elephants were looking for an equalizing goal but their efforts were thwarted by Heartland.

Towards the end of the first half, Chukwuemeka Obioma scored the second and final goal as the game ended 2-0 in favour of Heartland.

Enugu Rangers’ may have turned the corner as they stunned Warri Wolves 2-1 in Warri while Plateau United faltered again after they lost 2-1 at Sunshine Stars.

In Lagos, MFM FC to beat Jigawa Golden Stars 2-1 where Joshua Akpuje scored a ‘strange’ hat trick. He scored an own goal before netting two more for his side.

Katsina United forced Kano Pillars to a 1-1 draw in the Northwest Derby, while Adamawa played out a scoreless draw with fellow strugglers Wikki Tourists.

However, Lobi Stars remain top of the table on 27 points ahead of Rivers United, who also have 27 points with inferior goals difference.
