Nyima double strikes give Pillars first league victory


The wait is finally over for former champions, Kano Pillars as they secured their first match of the Nigeria Professional Football League defeating high flying Akwa Starlets 2-1.

The rescheduled Match Day 2 saw Pillars desirous to end their winless streak with a double strike from Super Eagles striker, Nyima Nwagua.

Nyima opened the scoring in the 27th minute to score the team’s first league goal, following an assist from talisman and captain, Rabiu Ali giving some respite and hope to the technical crew and the fans.

The goal ended a run of 493 minutes in the NPFL without a goal – the club’s longest goal drought since the start of the millennium.

The first half ended with Pillars bursting with confidence to score more goals but were unable to do.

The second half started in similar way but the home side, Akwa Starlets came back into the game in the 75th minute with Moses Effiong scoring the equalizing goal.

This was however shortlived as Nyima who was in imperious form scored his second of the day three minutes to secure all three points for Pillars with Rabiu once again giving the assist.

Following this victory, Masu Gida climbed out of relegation to move to 15th position on 6 points while the home side remained on 3rd position with 11 points.
