The Captain of the IBB International Golf & Country Club, Mr Shola Awoyungbo has made a passionate appeal to the federal government to restore the subventions given to the club.

He made this appeal while giving his speech during the Grand Finale of the President Buhari Golf Tournament organized by Daily Trust and held in the prestigious club.

The newly elected club captain who expressed his happiness that the President’s Cup was being revived during his tenure requested President Muhammadu Buhari who is the Grand Patron of the club to restore the subventions which was suspended in 2014.

“My welcome address will largely focus on the need of the government to restore the annual subvention of this great club, IBB International Golf & Country Club.

“IBB Golf Club is a national monument which has been built at a huge cost to the government and should not allow it to die. Since the withdrawal of subventions by the government in 2004, running this club has very challenging. For example, in the last four to five years, we have not been able to cover our expenditure thus our liabilities have been on the rise.

Awoyungbo also revealed that the club’s management are making conscious efforts to keep the club alive despite its financial challenges.

“We are doing our best to plug the leakages and balance our books. We are equally conscious that this public golf course therefore, the board of trustees have been restraining itself in increasing the membership fees/subscription so as not to make the club too exclusive. If not for the outstanding support from some key members and corporate organization, the story would have been worse.

He however stated that the club is not asking the government to fully provide the funding to maintain the club.

“I want to make myself very clear, I am not asking government to fully provide the funding, but my members are ready to partner with the government in the spirit of private public partnership,” he noted.
