Former Senate President, David Mark has slammed the Super Eagles of Nigeria over their poor performances at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Speaking on the sidelines of the just concluded President Buhari Golf Tournament at the IBB Golf Course, Mark believes the three-times African champions have all it takes to play with class.
I want Super Eagles to win the Nations Cup but I don’t think they have played optimally so far. That’s my own feeling but they can do better.
Our victories have not been convincing enough. The three points is important but we should show class. We are nearly 200m Nigerians and we can get 11 players that can show ‘Don’t play with us’.
Our games should be beyond three points. Nigerian players are in the field and the whole world watching must know how classy we are.
He also admonished the technical crew to change their tactics which to him are not bringing the desired results.
“First of all, our coaches must change tactics. Our passes are long and inaccurate which drops by 5%. We give away the ball so easily.
“Look at the Brazilians when they play. If you play well and you lose, we will understand. But if you don’t play well, people will say go and watch them.
The retired Nigerian Army Brigadier General further reiterated the need for the multinational companies to support sporting activities instead of the government.
“We can’t depend on government to fund sporting activities. There are lots of multinationals in this country. There is no reason why they can’t put a certain percentage of their profits into sports.
“Occasionally and unfortunately, when they want to appoint ministers, it looks like the ministry of sports is the last the government considers. Sports unite this country.
“Anytime the Super Eagles are playing, you see the love demonstrated amongst the ethnic groups. The support they garner when they play. I think we should look at sports differently and funding it deserves by getting multinationals to sponsor it,” he concluded.
