AAG: 1,200 athletes battle to represent Nigeria in Morocco


Ahead of the 12th All-Africa Games, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria has vowed to produce athletes that will win medals for the nation according to the AFN president, Ibrahim Gusau.

He stated this during the All Africa Games trials at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja in a chat on Tuesday.

“We are expecting personal best and national best will be gotten in these trials. I can assure Nigerians that the federation will fill in podium finish athletes.

“We have a very tall ambition in the federation and we pray that we meet them, because the sports ministry asked us how many medals we are expecting and we gave them our expectations.

“Hopefully we will get to the benchmarks that we have set for ourselves ahead of the Games in throws, track and field events, I can assure you that we are 80 percent ready for the Games,” he said.

In the same vein, the Technical Director, AFN, Sunday Adeleye said the federation received over 1200 entries from athletes to represent Nigeria in Morocco.

“We have athletes cut across all states, clubs, institutions, schools so it’s an open trials to all Nigerians, we received a entry of more than 1200 athletes excluding the foreign based athletes.

“Athletics in Nigeria in on the rise and we have potential athletes that can give Nigeria Gold medal in Africa and the world at large.

“We are so happy with the crop of talents that we have even with the little challenges we are striving hard to make sure we put up an impressive performance in Morocco and get a good represent at the Tokyo 2020.

The 12th African Games will take place from 19th to 31st August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco.
