Major upsets as top clubs crash out of Aiteo Cup

Nigeria’s oldest cup competition, Aiteo Cup has witnessed some major upsets which has seen some top clubs exiting the competition to some relative unknown clubs.

Newly crowned Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Enyimba FC have crashed out of the competition at the Round of 32 to non-league side, Smart City losing 3-2 on Wednesday in Benin City.

The 2019 NPFL champions went behind in the 17th minute before forcing an own goal in the 31st minute to make it 1-1 at the University of Benin Sports Complex, Edo State.

Three minutes after, the Lagos side took the lead again to stun the eight-time champions to make it 2-1.

At the restart of the second half, substitute Bashir Abdulrahaman scored to make it 2-2.

The Aba Warriors were further stunned in the 74th minute when they conceded the third goal to end their sojourn in the oldest cup competition in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, 2018 NPFL champions, Lobi Stars have bundled fellow league club and defending champions, Enugu Rangers out of the 77-year-old cup competition with a 2-0 victory in Bako Kontagora Stadium, Minna.

In the same vein, Akwa United, Gombe United, Wikki Tourists, Katsina, Delta Force, Sunshine Stars and Nasarawa United have all been knocked out of the cup.

Akwa United lost 3-0 to Rivers United as Shooting Stars defeated Katsina United 2-0 and Nasarawa United fell to a 1-0 defeat against Aklosendi Int’l FC

Niger Tornadoes shone over Gombe United to secure a 1-0 victory while Sunshine Stars failed to overcome EFCC.

Other results show Warri Wolves defeating Ambassador by a lone goal just as Abia Warriors battled Gateway United to earn a 2-0 victory.

Bendel Insurance defeated Ekiti United 4-2 to move to the Round of 16 while Kwara United needed a 5-4 penalty shootout victory to defeat Crown FC after the game ended 1-1

Calabar Robers defeated Wikki Tourists with a 4-2 penalty shootout just as Delta Force succumbed to a 10-11 penalty shootouts to Cynosure FC.
