A former Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Alhassan Yakmut has tasked elites to invest in developing sports in Nigeria.

He stated this during the Sallah Special Beach Volleyball Open Challenge organized by the Oladimeji Onikeku Sports Foundation.

The 2-day competition held at Musa Nimrod Beach Volleyball Development Center, Jikwoyi saw 24 male teams and 22 female teams competing for honours.

“When you are aging, you need replacement. My motivation is to get people to replace us to sustain the tempo of the development of volleyball in Nigeria. So when I consulted I felt it was nice to identify with the aims and objectives of the sponsor.

“If simple contribution from medium ranged officers like this, I think the Nigerian elites have been put to task,” he said.

He however urged that the template be replicated across the nation with support from stakeholders, cooperate sponsors as well as leadership of the communities.

In his own submission, the organiser of the competition, Samuel Onikeku who is the Secretary-General of Nigeria Customs Service’ Sports Unit, said he organized this to keep the youths busy as well as contribute his quota in developing volleyball in Nigeria.

“We want to keep the youths busy. If there are busy, the better for the country.

“The competition was for people based in Abuja but because of lack of competition, people started calling from Sokoto, Kaduna, Benue, Kogi and it was overwhelming,” he said.

After keenly contested games, Niger Warriors (Ohwodo Amos and Joseph Princewill ) defeated  Niger boys (Ibrahim Adamu and Briggs Emmanuel) 2-1 to emerge the winners in the male category.

Kada spikier of Kaduna (Abba Abigal and Scholastical Torkaa) cruised past Nyanya spikier (Chioma Okeke and Onyinye Onunkw) 2-1 in the female category.
