Akwa United and Enugu Rangers on Thursday picked their first wins on MatchDay 2 of the Nigeria Professional Football League playoffs, otherwise known as the Super Six.

The Promise Keepers desirous to get back into contention defeated IfeanyiUbah 2-1 at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.
The Anambra Warriors were the better side in the opening minutes of this game but their link-up in the final third was poor.

However, Emmanuel Ugwuka’s effort from just inside the box went past the despairing hands of Akwa’s Olorunleke Ojo as IfeanyiUbah opened scoring.

At the restart of the second half, Akwa increased the tempo of their game and were duly rewarded with a goal in the 48th minute as Cyril Olisema scored from a rebound after FCIU GK Anozie saved Godspower Aniefiok’s left footed shot.

In the 58th minute, Akwa United were awarded a penalty kick, the first of this playoff tournament after defender Charles Okafor handled Ndifreke Effiong’s cross which was coolly converted by Cyril Olisema to condemn IfeanyiUbah to their second defeat of the playoffs.

In the second game of the day, defending champions, Lobi Stars fell 2-1 to a wounded but rejuvenated Enugu Rangers.

In the 13th minute, Rangers opened scoring through Godwin Aguda and in the 28th minute, Chiamaka Madu doubled their lead, making it 2-0 going into the second half.

In the 51st minute, Lobi Stars pulled a goal back but all efforts to make a come back were not successful.

However, the third game of the day between Kano Pillars and Enyimba was abandoned due to the heavy rainfall after 45 minutes of action. The game will be replayed today by 9 am.

As it stands, Akwa United top the playoffs table with 4 points, closely followed by Lobi Stars on 3 points.

Enyimba and Enugu Rangers are third and fourth on the table with 3 points respectively.

Kano Pillars are fifth with a single point while IfeanyiUbah are rooted to the bottom with no point so far.
