Former Manchester United and Real Madrid boss, Jose Mourinho believes Egypt international and Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah can clinch the 2019 Ballon d’Or award, but only on one condition.
The two-time African Footballer of the Year made history over the weekend when he became the first Egyptian ever to win the UEFA Champions League title following Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the final on Saturday.
Salah, who netted the opening goal from the penalty spot, scored the second-fastest goal in the history of the UCL final after scoring his 27th goal across all competitions less than two minutes into the tie against Spurs.
In addition to this incredible feat, Salah also clinched a second consecutive Premier League Golden Boot after the finishing the 2018/19 campaign with 22 league goals, along with fellow Africans Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sadio Mane.
Mourinho believes Salah can make history by becoming only the second African ever to lift the Ballon d’Or after Liberian legend George Weah did so in 1993, but only if the former Reds superstar clinches the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title with Egypt.
“Salah has to win the Africa Cup of Nations if he wants to compete for the Ballon d’Or,” Mourinho told beIN SPORTS.
“The tournament is taking place in Egypt, which makes it a demand that has to be achieved.”
Egypt, who are seven-time AFCON champions, have been drawn in a group alongside DR Congo, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
The Pharaohs begin their AFCON journey on 21 June with a tie against The Warriors at the Cairo International Stadium.
