Super Eagles secures first victory over Egypt in 29 years

FIFA rankings: Nigeria retains 4th position in Africa

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday defeated the Pharaohs of Egypt 1-0 in a friendly match played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

The Eagles, who have failed to defeat the Pharaohs since the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations got to a dream start Paul Onuachu scored Nigeria’s fastest goal in international competition within 30 seconds the game kicked off.

Both teams were without their key players such as Ahmed Musa and reigning African player of the year, Mohammed Salah.

In the 30th minute, the visiting side began to fashion out ways to get back into the game, but the Eagles defense was well marshalled by the duo of Leon Balogun and stand-in keeper, William Paul Troost-Ekong.

As the game wore on, Onuachu who was making his full debut attempted to stamp his authority on the game, but was unable to physically shrug off Egyptian defenders who either muscled him off the ball or block his attempts at goal.

At the restart of the second half, coach Gernot Rohr made a goalkeeping change by taking off Kaizer Chiefs’ Daniel Akpeyi off and bringing on Katsina goaltender, Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

The visitors were enjoying some good share of ball possession and forced Ezenwa into a double save.

This is Nigeria’s 8th win over Egypt, losing 5 and drawing the remaining 5 in 18 games played so far between the former African champions.
