ICC World Cup qualifiers: Nigeria wins second straight match

| |

Nigeria’s U-19 cricket team, Junior Yellow Greens, have brightened their chance of competing in 2020 age-group World Cup following their second successive victory at the ongoing ICC Africa World Cup qualifiers at United Cricket Ground in Windhoek, Namibia.

They defeated their Kenyan counterparts with 58 runs in the second match, yesterday.

Put in to bat first, Nigeria scored 201 runs for the loss of four wickets in their allotted 50 overs with Elijah Olaleye hit half a century, 73 off 105 deliveries with five boundaries.

He was Nigeria’s highest runs getter. Captain Slyvester Okpe scored unbeaten half a ton, 55 off 72 balls with four boundaries and two sixes. Sulaiman (41 off 67 balls with two boundaries) was the other Nigerian batsman who shone with the bat.

In the second innings, Kenya started brilliantly in their run chase losing the first wicket after 40 runs. However, the bowling attack for Nigeria was too strong as they restricted Kenya to a total score of 143 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 50 overs.

Nigeria proved bookmakers wrong in the opening game of the Africa Division 1 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifiers, beaten host Namibia with 77 runs in the opening game played at the Wanderers Cricket Stadium in faraway Windhoek, Namibia on Sunday.

The West African’s who showed very good promise in the Division 2 tournament last year in South Africa, relied on tenacious fielding to stun the hosts.

Batting first, Nigeria scored a below par 129 for eight, with Samuel Mba scoring a patient 25 from 90 balls, and Miracle Ikiage chipping in with 22.

Mauritius Ngupita took three for 16 for the host’s. In reply, Namibia crashed to 77 all out, with man of the match Sylvester Okpe grabbing three for 16 in seven overs, sealing a well-deserved 52-run triumph.

Nigeria will play Uganda in their next fixture, tomorrow.
