Why LMC postponed today’s league matches indefinitely

Long awaited abridged 2018/19 NPFL season resumes seven months after

The League Management Company, LMC has postponed indefinitely the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match day 11 fixtures initially fixed for today.

It was gathered that the postponement may have been necessitated as a result of the General Elections.

The league organisers in a circular from its Chief Operating Officer, Salihu Abubakar, sent to all the 22 clubs in the league and made available to newsmen, revealed that the matches slated for midweek this week have been shifted to a later date.

“Kindly be informed that the Match day 11 games scheduled for Wednesday 27th February, 2019 have been postponed and a new date will be communicated in due course,” the circular read.

Plateau United lauded the decision of the organisers not to put the lives of players, coaches and other officials at risk at this critical point in the country.

Defender Ogene Elijah, whose Plateau United side would have been on the road to Umuahia ahead of the game, said: “We in Plateau United received the news of the league postponement with thumbs up to the organizers of the league for not putting the lives of players, coaches and other officials at risk.”

“It is nice that the LMC has deemed it fit to consider the wellbeing of the players and others in the league and we must praise them for this gesture. We would have been on our way to Umuahia by now but we have been saved the pains of what may likely happen at this point in time and we are grateful to them.”

The 2019 league season which is in an abridged format started on January 13 this year and 10 Match days had been played in both Groups A and B with MFM and FC Ifeanyi  Ubah holding sway in both groups and they are doing their best to qualify for the season-ending playoffs from where a new champion will emerge.
