Lobi Stars of Makurdi got off to a perfect start in the CAF Champions League after condemning Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa to a 2-1 defeat in Friday’s Group A opening fixture at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
The Nigerian champions with the result ended the South Africa’s champions nine game unbeaten run.
Mamelodi Sundowns, 2017 CAF Champions League winners, when in front after 38 minutes through Liberia international striker Anthony Laffor, who coolly put the ball home after the South Africans opened the defence in a fast counter attack.
However, the Pride of Benue drew level in first half stoppage time from the penalty spot through Yaya Kone after Sunday Adetunji was brought down inside the box on his way to goal.
Matthias scored his second goal of the competition in the 52nd minute when he fired home with his left foot from inside the box to beat a stranded goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene.
Lobi Stars, who were without star strikers Samad Kadiri and Sikiru Alimi, stepped up their game after the interval and could have won by a bigger margin with Man of the Match Sunday Adetunji catching the eye with his penetration into the opposing defence time and again.
