CAF Confed Cup: Rangers silence Algerian foes, qualify for group stage

Enugu Rangers International of Nigeria have qualified for the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup after their 2-0 victory over USM Bel Abbes of Algeria.

First half double from the forward Bright Silas was enough to secure the win over ten-man the Algerians at the Cathedral on Sunday.

A first half from Bright Silas powered the Nigerians past the visitors at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium on Sunday evening.

With a 0-0 draw recorded in the first leg, Gbenga Ogunbote were aware that a win of any margin will see them progress while the Algerians were eyeing an away-goal advantage.

The Nigeria Federation Cup kings began the game on a bright note by taking the lead through Silas in the fifth minute. The hosts could have added more goals but for profligacy in front of goal.

In the closing stages of the first half, Silas doubled his lead to give his side a comfortable lead going into the second half.

No goals were recorded in the second half but Boualem  Mesmoul was sent off for a second caution.

With this victory, Ogunbote’s side joined other fifteen African club that qualified for the group stage and will wait until December 28 before knowing their next foes.

They will be drawn against the losers of the Champions League first round, with Rangers billed to host the second leg.

Also, Zamalek SC, NAHD, San Pedro, New Star, Petrol Atletico, Kaizer Chiefs, Kampala city, Asante Kotoko Salitas FC and Mukura FC completed the 16 teams expected to drawn for group stage.
