Edo to host 2020 National Sports Festival

The Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung announced Edo at the closing ceremony of the 19th edition of the sports festival at the Main Bowl of the Abuja National Stadium.

According to Dalung” After much consideration Edo State will host the 2020 edition of the National sports Festival, the sports ministry will give adequate support to the Edo state government for a successful hosting of the 20th edition.
“As we draw the curtains to this game, we look forward to the continuous hosting of the National Sports Festival as scheduled without break or hiccup.
“In order to ensure that enough time is given to the host of the 20th edition of the festival, my ministry set up a team to evaluate the states that signified the interests to host the next edition in 2020.
“After a thorough evaluation of the plans for the hosting of the Games, Edo is hereby awarded the hosting rights for the 20th National Sports Festival in 2020”, he declared.
In his accepted speech the the Edo State Governor Mr Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki assured Nigerians that his state is committed to the hosting of the games, adding that they will work closely with the ministry of youth and sports to ensure a successful hosting of the events in 2020 .
Earlier the Dalung had named the four states who have expressed their interest to host the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival which were Edo, Kaduna, Cross River,and Delta states
Meanwhile, Delta state retained the overall winners’ trophy with a total of 351 medals comprising of 163 gold, 87 silver and 101 bronze.
Team Rivers came second with 193 medals comprising of 69 gold, 58 silver and 66 bronze.
While Teams Edo, Lagos and Bayelsa make up the top 5 with a total of 141 , 146 and 136 medals respectively.
Meanwhile the FCT Minister Mallam Muhammad Musa Bello who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Mr. Ohaa Chinyeaka Christian opined that despite the shot time frame given to the nation’s capital to host games they where able to put up proper logistics and organization of the sports festival
On his parts the Nigeria Olympic Committee NOC president, Habu Gumel lauded all the athletes and officials adding that the best athletes from the sports festival will be camped ahead of the 2019 All African Games and 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
