The newly appointed FCT Golf Association Chairman, Engr Oladapo Olaide Mohammed has promised to work tirelessly to ensure Abuja becomes the Nigeria’s golf tourist centre while advocating for the development of the sport in public schools.
He made the assertion while briefing newsmen at the FCT Golf Association 2018 inaugural Kitty and prize presentation at the IBB Golf and Country Club in Abuja yesterday, the golfer stressed the need to reintroduce golf in public schools in a bid to develop the sport at the grassroots level.
“Our board will introduce the game to all the secondary schools in Abuja as efforts and plans to achieve such programmes are in progress, because these children in the public schools have to be taught the game at their tender age for them to be able to represent the country in future tournaments, removing the myth of Golf as exclusive for the rich and we are encouraging youths to start golf early.” he said
“We are also working on how we can inculcate civil Servants and private sector officials, this will geometrically increase the density and quality of the players. This will also enable social networking and the benefits associated with it”
According to him, the association will “We are also looking at making Abuja a preferred Golf tourist destination in conjunction with relevant government agencies, Abuja city will be made the preferred destination for golfers.
“We want to encourage business leaders and industrialists to build Golf Courses by advocating for allocation of green areas from FCTA development of Golf Courses”
Meanwhile the secretary for the association Mr Suleiman Yusuf also revealed why the FCT will now be participating at the National sports festivals.
“FCT golfers will not be competing at the National sports festival because most of our professional players are not disposed at the moment because of other engagements outside, while others are seriously undergoing trainings hence they will not be participating at the games as we do not want to be short on the number of players needed for the win” he revealed.
