Dalung bids 17 athletes farewell to Youth Olympics Games

The Minister of Youths and Sports, Barr Solomon Dalung has urged the athletes representing the nation at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Argentina to avoid doping.

The Minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Olusade Adesola stated this during a farewell ceremony held at the National Stadium in Abuja.

According to the minister, the athletes should avoid eating foods other than the ones approved by the coaching crew to avoid taking in substances which are considered illegal by the anti-doping agents.

Dalung also encouraged them to be kind, considerable but should go for the victory not playing under any form of inducement.

“While we want you to excel, we want you to keep your heads upright by not engaging on activities that will taint your character and person.”

“Athletes should not eat anything without approval from the team to avoid been banned for doping. Follow camp rules, he noted.”

While speaking on the preparations so far, the minister praised the coaching crew while acknowledging their high competitive spirit.

“Their spirit is very high as they know they are not working for Nigeria or competing for the sake of money but as we have interacted with them, they are working for their career.”

“We have inculcated in them that passion as they are going to compete with their colleagues more importantly, they are going to compete clean without any stain.”

“They are not under pressure to deliver as they have the passion to deliver. It’s in them to deliver and are working hard,” he said.

The minister also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for flagging off the 19th edition of the National Sports Festival during the Independence Day Dinner.

In his own submission, the team captain, Ineh Oritsemeyiwa Emmanuel thanked the sports ministry while expressing the team’s optimism to do the nation proud.

The Youth Olympic Games is known as Buenos Aires 2018 will be hosted in Buenos Aires, Argentina between 6 and 18 October 2018 and Nigeria will be participating in 8 sporting events.
