Ahead of the 58th Independence Day celebration on Monday, the West Africa Gold Tour has teed off with Ghanaian golfer, Vincent Torgah leading with a 4-under 66 in the first round of the 1st October Championship at Port Harcourt Golf Club.
The first edition of this golf tournament teed off on 28th September to end on Monday in celebration of the country’s independence.
Two Nigerian players, Morgan Atako and Sunday Olapade share the second place with 2-under 68 while 3 Donatus Obadofin, Kwame Ligbidi and Andrew Odoh tied at -1, 69. The majority of contenders shot over par.
After taking a short break during the raining season, the West Africa Golf Tour continued again with four more tournaments in September, October and November until concluding the 2018 season in December.
The 1st October championship features the leading players of the Tour, Vincent Torgah, Sunday Olapade, Visitor Mapwanya, Samba Niang, among others.
With just four events remaining, players will be looking to win and improve their position on the Order of Merit.
The tournament will have a prize money of $25.000 dollars shared out amongst the players who make the cut.
Amateur golfers will enter the event on Sunday and compete for two days. Spectators are welcome to come to Port Harcourt Golf Club and watch golf life.
