The Minister of Youth and Sports, Barr Solomon Dalung has thrown his weight behind the development of sitting volleyball in Nigeria.
He also commended the Nigeria Sitting Volleyball Federation for organising a Demonstration Match aimed at boosting the beauty of the sport as well as promoting the popularity of the game.
Dalung stated this during the at the Sports complex, Package B of the National Stadium Abuja earlier today.
The sports minister who was represented by an Assistant Director in the ministry Mr Dans Adokiye, commended the federation for their giant step towards the development of the game in the country.
“I sincerely commend this initiative of your federation in organizing this all important demonstrations match which will go a long way to further boost the beauty of the sport and also promote the popularity of the sports in all books and crannies of Nigeria” he said
According to Dalung “Sitting Volleyball is in Paralympic Games and Commonwealth Games. It has a lot of potential that can do Nigeria proud at these games and other international competitions if properly harnessed “
Dalung urges the federation to continue developmental programs, coaching and officiating courses that will take the federation to an enviable height.
In his own submission, the Sitting Volleyball Federation president, Mr David Anyaele acknowledged the effort of the sport Minister toward the development of the game since the election of the board members and pledged to place the nation on the world map when it comes to sitting volleyball.
The President also sought for assistance from financially stable federations in the country to collaborate with his federation.
“Today’s demonstration match it to publicize the beauty of sitting volleyball from the six geopolitical zone of Nigeria so that to support athletes with disabilities, federation recognition has now gain from world para volleyball federation and we seek support to take that game to the grassroots level in Nigeria””
“Also we are working hard to make sure that we qualify for Toyko 2020 this can be achieve with the coming together of all stakeholders” he added
Sitting Volleyball which is a Paralympic and Commonwealth Games is a modified version of able bodied indoor Volleyball for people with impaired lower function.
