FIBA World Cup: D’Tigress lose to Australia in group opener

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress began their campaign at the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup with a loss to Australia yesterday losing 86-68.

The Otis Hughley led side lost the first quarter 24-18, losing narrowly 18-14  in the second quarter before going into the half time break at the San Cristobal de la Laguna, Spain.

The team, however, showed no fear against the 2014 edition finalists as they put up a good fight to win the third quarter 23-21.

The Australians not wanting to be caught off guard, put all stops to the Nigerians’ momentum to win the fourth quarter 23-14 to claim victory.

The game ended 86-68 in favour of Australia.

D’Tigress though down will however get into the pitch tonight against Turkey in their second group game and will finish off their group stage with a game against South American side Argentina on Tuesday, September 25.

Nigeria will be hoping to secure their first win against Turkey in Spain to record their first win ever at the World Cup.

D’Tigress are drawn in Group B of the competition along with Australia, Turkey and Argentina.
