Taekwondo federation to train 100 referees by 2019

The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation has concluded plans to host major National Referee Workshops in both Kyeorugi and Poomsae, between October 1 and 3, ahead of the prestigious 9th Korea Ambassador Cup (KAC).

The workshops are part of the processes to ensure professional and fair officiating is done at the National Sports Festival and Korea Ambassadors Cup aimed at training over 100 taekwondo Referees by 2019 based on recent update in competition rules by the World Taekwondo (WT) body and new technology ahead the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF)-A ranked taekwondo event of this year’s National Sports Festival (NSF).

According to NTF first-ever female President, Mrs Margaret Binga, the focus of the current taekwondo leadership in Nigeria was to train and parade quality Referees at national events.

She added, “Bad officiating ensures that good talent and athletes lose out unfairly and the national teams will then end up with second-choice competitors. This is why the Federation is eager to ensure that our referees are up to date long before the National Sports Festival through this national referee workshop which would have an impact on selections ahead of the 2019 All African Games”

“Our goal is to have 100 new referees by the end of 2019. We have 32 new referees that attended the last workshop in 2017 and we hope to have some new referees join next month during the workshop. We also increased the mandatory daily allowances for Referees to encourage them in their chosen career”

Chairman of the NTF Referee Department, Mrs Winfred Eleri, assured that NTF Referees will be ushered into an era that ensures career progression and development.

“If we want our referees to be invited more often internationally, they have to be of high standard, hence this workshop. I am glad that our events department have been so prolific in organizing national events. This means that our NTF Referees will have enough officiating practise that would boost their careers.

“We have been working very hard for the past year to come up with a referee brand that reflects our nationality and that we can be proud of. There was a four-year concept that we are just upgrading and which we will unveil at the national sports festival. It is important that the referees feel good when doing their duties to add to the overall ambience and importance of our competitions”

Participants from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory will be expected to participate during the world-class Referee course expected to feature international referees that will be flown in to conduct the workshop.
