Farouk Mohammed’s late penalty have secured the needed three points for Enyimba as they defeated Malian side, Djoliba 1-0 in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage encounter on Sunday night.
The Nigerian side who needed maximum points to brighten their chances of making it out of the group came out of the blocks from the blast of the whistle.
In a very physical match played at the Modibo Keita Stadium in Mali saw an energised 10 minutes from the boys in Bamako in search of the opener but their efforts were thwarted by the Aba boys.
The first half ended with no spectacular brilliance from both teams but at the restart of the second half, the tempo changed with the home side creating dangerous chances but goalkeeper, Theophilus Afelokhai came to the rescue.
However, towards the last few minutes of the game, the Nigerians took the initiatives and began to mount pressure on the home side and it paid off very late as Sunday Adetunji won Enyimba a penalty after a wild lunge by a Djoliba defender.
Farouk Mohammed broke the deadlock from the spot to seal 3 massive points for Nigeria’s most successful club.
With this victory, Enyimba have moved to the second position with 9 points behind CARA Brazzaville whom they meet in ten days’ time in Aba.
