It is the end of the road for the Falconets as they crashed out of the ongoing U-20 Women World Cup, losing 2-1 to Spain on Thursday in the 1st of the quarter-final matches.
The girls knowing fully well how important it was for them to win the game approached it with determination. In the 13th minute of the game, the determination was shredded apart as they fell to first goal of the game scored by Aitana Bonmati
Not daunted by the early set back, Rasheedat Ajibade put through a fine cross but Spain’s Catalina Coll denied Grace Igboamalu of a final touch inside the box.
The Europeans showed their class and superiority over Nigeria as they doubled their lead in the added time of the first half through Patricia Guijarro.
However, in the 57th minute, Peace Efih pulled one back for the Falconets after Ajibade’s attempt was turned out by Coll.
Following the goal, the Christopher Danjuma team had the belief to score again and their efforts at getting the equalising goal contributed to the team having their first corner of the match at the 74th minute.
With this defeat, Africa’s only hope of winning the trophy has been extinguished. The Falconets best results at this championship was at the 2010 and 2014 editions where they came second.
