Go Round FC chances of staying in the Nigeria Professional Football League next season have been dimmed further following yet another loss, this time to Akwa United in Wednesday’s rescheduled MatchDay 22.
The Rivers based club who were promoted to the Nigeria Premier League for the first time in 2017 on the last day of the league season knew they had an uphill task to overcome.
The game played at the official home of the Super Eagles, the 30,000 capacity Nest of Champions in Uyo started with almost five missed chances from the home side within the first 28 minutes of the encounter.
However, the 2017 FA cup winners opened the scoring in the 29th minute through Paul Obata after benefitting from Olisema’s deflected shot to tap in past GK Obiowo.
Spurred with the goal, Akwa United sought for another goal but Obiowo was at alert to deny Cyril Olisema from extending Akwa’s lead.
Just before the first half ended, Nwachukwu Chidi almost equalised for Go Round but for the woodwork.
At the restart of the second half, Ubong Friday and Ezekiel Bassey replaced Paul Obata and Cyril Olisema who caused a lot of problems for the opponents’ defence.
There was, however, a big chance for the home side to extend their lead but for a great defending from the away side. Victor Mbaoma had calmly slotted the ball beyond the reach of Obiowo but his effort was cleared on the line.
With this result, Akwa United have jumped up the ladder to take hold of the 6th position with 32 points to end a 5 winless run while Go Round have sunk further into relegation sitting uncomfortably on 18th with 26 points who have managed to pick up just one point away from home this season in a NPFL18 game.
