Betis win at the Bernabeu for the first time since Finidi George’s side in 1998
La Liga champion, Real Madrid have for the first time in 73 matches failed to score a goal just as the Whites lose to a defensive and spirited Real Betis side.
Madrid have now dropped seven points from their opening three home matches of the season.
That is stunning as Barcelona hold a seven-point lead in the early stages of the campaign. Real Betis were dogged and determined at the back to thwart Zinedine Zidane’s men, capitalising on their poor finishing.
The visitors grew in confidence towards the end of the match and were rewarded when Antonio Sanabria headed home to secure the three points. It is their first win at the Bernabeu since 1998.
Making his first Liga appearance of the season after serving a five-match domestic ban, Ronaldo was unable to have the same impact he did a week ago when he netted a brace against APOEL in the Champions League.
The Portuguese star tried hard and had numerous attempts on goal, but Madrid failed to score for the first time since April 2016, ending a record-equalling run of 73 games in which they had netted.
And while they looked set to be forced to settle for a frustrating share of the spoils, worse was to follow when Sanabria headed past Navas in the 94th minute to leave the champions seven points behind rivals and league leaders Barcelona.
