Our Chances Of Retaining Our Title Is Very Slim – Ranieri

| |

Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has said that the likelihood of them successfully defending their Premier league title are ‘6000-1’.

The odds were a reference to the now-infamous odds at the start of last season, which had offered punters the chance to bet on the Foxes at 5000-1 – netting a number of fans massive windfalls as they finished the season 10 points clear of Arsenal in second place.

Ranieri told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “The fundamental concept is to start from scratch. We’ve won the title and it was beautiful and fantastic, it was maybe an unrepeatable achievement, but now we turn the page.

“If at the start of last season the bookmakers had us down as 5000-1 shots, then this time we start at 6000-1. Our objective to start the season with is to reach 40 points and stay up.

“Then, once we’ve reached that objective, we can raise the bar: finish in the top 10, [qualify for] the Europa League, a place in the Champions League. And maybe we can win one of the five trophies will be challenging for: Community Shield, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League. That is our running order, step by step.”

He added that Jamie Vardy signing a new contract at the King Power Stadium this summer sent out a signal of the club’s intent, saying: “It was huge. It gave a signal to all. He could have gone to Arsenal, earned more money and taken advantage of his last chance to land in a world-class club.

“He preferred instead to stay at Leicester and it seems to me a choice like Gigi Riva. Vardy should be thanked.”
